Microsoft App Icons

Ever since Microsoft’s visual refresh of icons across 10 core Office apps, we have collectively continued to expand the family of icons into a much larger system. Aiming for more cohesion without rigid consistency, the system now has well over 100 icons. I was excited to direct this celebratory film in a collaboration with Microsoft’s brand team, Zelig Sound and Studio Tendril. The animation gives a glimpse of how this family of icons comes together into such system.

Seen below are some of the early style frames from our look development.

In addition to the video, we also created a poster that highlighted the idea of a system of connected parts that can be reconfigured to form brand new icons.

An image illustrating the ever-growing library of experiences within Windows, Microsoft 365 and Dynamics 365.

Images I created to showcase Microsoft Lens, one of the latest additions to the family.

Thank you!

To Sven Seger, Studio Tendril and Zelig Sound for the partnership on the video, Alexis Copeland for creating many of the beautiful images seen above.

Thank you also to Albert Shum, Alberto Cerriteno, Alexis Copeland, Anice Jumani, Burns Montgomery, David Huang, Jon Friedman, Jonah Sterling, Mistelle Taylor, Phil Evans, Ron Sasaki, Sven Seger and many more of my colleagues at Microsoft for their partnership in making this expansive system a success in and out of Microsoft.
