Re-Imagined Material

We invited digital artist Wes Cockx to create a series of experiments inspired by Google’s Material Design.

While these static and animated artworks aren’t intended to reflect the existent direction of Google’s design language, they aim to capture a deeper embrace of textures, dimensionality, and lighting that is akin to those of the physical world, aiming to give them a fantastical, yet familiar quality.

They also attempt to acknowledge the digital nature of our device’s software, by infusing certain characteristics of intangible materials.

Visuals by Wes Cockx. Music and Sound Design by Zelig Sound. Thanks to the incredible work of the folks at Zelig, this project won a D&AD Yellow Pencil for Sound Design & Use of Music in 2023. “We awarded Google Design the highest Pencil for its many clever parts. It's brilliantly crafted, blurring the lines between music and sound design, and it elevates the animation by creating personality and charm with all its detail. It stands as a work of inspiration for upcoming sound designers.” Abby Sie, Head of Sound, Film & TV, MassiveMusic Sydney
